In , Jeff Wall published Landscape Manual, a book whose annotated text provided a commentary on the making of landscape photographs; the images illustrating the manual showed a suburban road, with its vacant lots, cars, and houses. Alternating points of view between a «wandering» approach for the photo-text essay Landscape Manual of the early ’s, carefully composed subjects on lightboxes with Diagonal Composition () and more intimate themes with Torso () printed on . The Manual has been developed to provide designers of highway facilities including managers, engineers and landscape architects, a guide for the desired environmentally responsible and aesthetic outcomes of individual projects. It is intended for CDOT internal use, as well as for consultants, it gives direction for landscape and structural.


Wall himself scored a precocious success as a conceptual artist in , when his cheaply produced booklet, “Landscape Manual,” of nondescript Vancouver places that he photographed from a car. Wall’s early work addressed Conceptual art via photography. In –70, he produced a small brochure, Landscape Manual, containing black-and-white photographs of Vancouver taken from the window of a car.
